Ecommerce versus offline catalogue sales

Home:

In 2009 a chart was commissioned by the 'Silicon Alley Insider' to compare the sales of ecommerce, Amazon ecommerce sales and offline retail sales for a six year period.

As the chart shows, as offline sales have stagnated, with minimal growth, ecommerce sales, whether at Amazon or elsewhere have doubled or tripled in number. What is of particular interest, is how well Amazon have done, relative to other ecommerce sales during the past couple of years. The expansion of Amazon's marketplace/seller business is seen as a primary cause in the rapid recent sales boom.

With US/UK sales trends of a similar nature, we can be quite sure that a chart commissioned for the UK would indicate similar findings. As for catalogue sales, we can find a good example of ecommerce sales effecting offline retail. Shop Direct, owners of Littlewoods home catalogue, have announced that half of it's call centre employees will be made redundant. While the poor current retail conditions are no doubt a proportion of the decision, the main reason appears to be the success of Home Retails ecommerce sites.

Home Retail have released figures to shows that calls to their centres have dropped from thirty three million to only nineteen million from 2005-2009. This does not represent a loss of business, but is simply customers using Home Retails ecommerce site to order and conduct account data.
