One question that is always posed, do Levi Strauss produce
a catalogue. After an email correspondence, the answer is
no they do not. Their products are only sold via a list of
authorised
online traders, and through their real world stores and
partner stores. There is, however, evidence that Levi Strauss
have released advertising materials, in the form of a catalogue
to entice current and prospective customers of their wares.
Levi Strauss & Co. started as a business way back in
eighteen hundred and fifty three. The company was named after
it's founder, Levi Strauss, and is still held in private hands
(his descendants). Strauss was a German who emigrated to San
Francisco. It was in that city that he built his business,
and it's headquarters remain in San Francisco to this day.
Early on the business produced denim work clothes, it was
only relatively recently, the 1950's, that Levi denim's began
to become a fashion garment.
Levi Strauss as an organisation, has undergone many changes
since the 1990's. Whereas once, their garments were made in
the US, and their factories and employee remuneration credited
as amongst the best in the industry. The 1990's represented
stiff competition from garments manufactured overseas, which
has eventually forced Levi to close most of it's domestic
factories. During the 2000's Levi were making a loss during
most of it's trading years, with an overall debt believed
to be in the region of two billion dollars.
Levi are accredited with commissioning some of the most memorable
television advertisement. The music on these adverts is usually
a key part of the message, and usually results in the song
achieving a high placement in the US and UK charts.
